Austin is known as the live music capital of the USA, but for whom?

The Nighttime Lab program at SXSW was a collaboration between VibeLab, the German Center for Research and Innovation (DWIH) New York, The German Haus, and Resident Advisor.

Our guest curator, Lauren Goshinski, brought together a global community of nighttime experts, forging knowledge and innovative action models.

The event's premise was the often-overlooked value of nighttime culture within urban planning, policy, governance, and cultural definitions.

Despite the growing global movement advocating for nighttime governance, there needs to be more data and frameworks need to be improved by evidence-based, forward-thinking initiatives.

This event endeavoured to spotlight the nighttime culture's worth as a part of civilisation and a potent source of urban innovation and prosperity.

Culturally Curated Nightlife Has Historically Operated On The Margins

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯

Austin, known for its vibrant and diverse cultural scene, is grappling with the dual challenge of urban development and artistic preservation.

Rapid real-estate growth threatens to displace longstanding cultural spaces and communities that have played a vital role in shaping Austin's identity.

Spaces ranging from online radio stations to locally focused record labels, clubs, intimate warehouses, and renegade-style events serve as more than just entertainment venues. They facilitate essential community connections and provide platforms for expressing Austin's rich tapestry of cultures.

These innovative spaces and communities serve as crucial social infrastructure that often centres on marginalised communities.

It was designed to address these challenges and promote the preservation of Austin's unique nighttime culture.

“By valuing and supporting spaces and groups that define Austin's cultural landscape, the city can continue to evolve as a thriving, inclusive, and economically sustainable destination, staying true to its "weird" and unique identity

- Charles Moon, Music Programmer, SXSW.
