Currently, the economic situation for Berlin's nightlife stakeholders is rather challenging, due in part to rising rents, energy costs, and personnel expenses. The aftermath of the pandemic and other global crises have further exacerbated these issues.
The strategy explores the key findings related to the value, challenges, and future aspirations of nightlife in the city:
Berlin's "Nighttime Strategy" aims to enhance and sustain its vibrant nightlife. Here are the ten main focus areas:
Diversity in the Music and Event Industry: Promote innovation and fairness in the industry.
Nightlife Liaison at BVG: Improve communication and safety for night-time mobility.
Promotion of Sustainable Tourism: Create green spaces and promote local artists.
Legislative Changes to the Night-Time Economy: Designate special zones and adjust regulations.
Social Anchoring of the Night-Time Economy: Foster mutual understanding and promote a sustainable night-time economy.
Foundation of a Night-Time Economy Forum: Establish a multidisciplinary body to promote the night-time economy.
Public-Private Partnership for Property Utilization: Foster cooperation for the interim and long-term use of spaces.
Improving Working Conditions: Develop support services and training programs for night-time workers.
Promotion of Small Venues: Increase funding and support for private venues and cultural organizations.
Protection from Noise Conflicts: Plan mediation and noise protection measures.
To address these challenges comprehensively, VibeLab in partnership with Clubcommission Berlin e.V., developed a Nighttime Strategy outlining ten objectives and 30 recommendations. Commissioned by the Senate Department for Economics, Energy, and Public Enterprises, Nighttime Strategy delivers actionable recommendations aimed at fostering diversity, promoting sustainable tourism, and streamlining administrative processes.
“It remains a challenge to counteract displacement while promoting diversity. With an intentionally inclusive strategy, we can ensure Berlin's unique club culture continues to thrive and grow.”
— Emiko Gejic, Vice-Chairperson of Clubcommission Berlin e.V.
