Habitat Norway, UCLG, VibeLab, and UN-Habitat worked together to share knowledge and learning between cities, civil society, and other actors worldwide through a peer learning process aligned with the UN Guidelines on Safer Cities we build a report that reflects on good practices when ensuring safety worldwide.

Three learning events have been organised since October 2022 to facilitate a global exchange on safer city initiatives encompassing a prevention-focused, integrated, multistakeholder approach. To consolidate the knowledge and foster the dissemination of proven practices,  a report with the key takeouts from the webinars and a summary of the leading cases that have presented was presented at the 12th session of the World Urban Forum in November 2024.

The Safer Cities Report delves into municipal safety policies, civil society initiatives, and innovative tools aimed at creating safer cities, bringing forth connections between safety aspects as it relate to women and girls, nighttime governance, green space, cultural interventions and climate adaptation, among others.

“local governments are the first layer of the neighborhood and the first that we can work with to create safer cities but without active civil society not much will happen.”
